Reasons Behind No Soy, Wheat, or Legumes

Jun 23, 2025 Real Power (MY)
Understanding the Hidden Risks Behind Common Ingredients

Many commercial pet food brands use ingredients like soybeans, wheat, peas, lentils, and chickpeas because they offer a high protein-to-cost ratio. However, not all protein is created equal—especially when it comes to the health of your dog or cat.

At REAL POWER, our nutrition team intentionally excludes soy, wheat, and legumes from our formulas due to concerns around GMO content, mycotoxins, and anti-nutritional factors that can seriously impact your pet’s long-term health.

🚫 Why We Say No to Soybeans

GMO Risks

Over 90% of soybeans in global agriculture are genetically modified (GMO), especially in the U.S. (USDA, 2019). The long-term health effects of GMO consumption remain controversial, particularly when used in high quantities. At REAL POWER, we believe in minimizing unknown risks, so we avoid GMO soy entirely.

🚫 Why Is Wheat A Concern?

Mycotoxin

Wheat is highly prone to mold contamination due to humidity and temperature changes. Mold produces dangerous secondary metabolites—mycotoxins—which can be deadly to pets, even in small doses. These include:

  • Aflatoxins (AFB1, AFB2, AFG1, AFG2)

  • Ochratoxin A (OTA), Citrinin

  • Deoxynivalenol (DON)

  • Zearalenone (ZEA)

  • Fumonisins (FUM)

  • Trichothecenes (T-1, T-2)

Cats and dogs have a limited ability to detoxify these toxins, and long-term exposure can damage the liver, kidneys, immune system—and even trigger tumors or cancer.

Allergy concern

Gluten, a protein found in the bran layer of wheat, is a known allergen. In sensitive pets, it can cause gastrointestinal issues, skin rashes, and respiratory symptoms. Consuming too much wheat may overstimulate gluten antibodies, resulting in immune reactions and inflammation.

🚫 Why We Exclude Legumes

Immune-Disrupting Antigens

Certain legumes contain persistent antigens—molecules that can trigger immune responses. These antigens may survive standard pet food manufacturing processes and penetrate the intestinal barrier, entering the bloodstream. Once there, they can form immune complexes that cause:

  • Diarrhea

  • Chronic inflammation

  • Skin rashes

  • Gut irritation

Although legumes may be a nutritious plant protein for humans, they are not ideal for dogs and cats, especially those with sensitive systems. REAL POWER formulas use only animal-based proteins that offer higher digestibility, fewer allergens, and better biological value.

REAL POWER’s Ingredient Philosophy

We believe that clean, natural, and functional nutrition leads to healthier pets. By avoiding questionable plant proteins and focusing on high-quality meat-based ingredients, we eliminate hidden risks and ensure every bite supports your pet’s well-being.
